Steps to Building the Cabinet

Whew! The first cabinet is completed (for the most part). “Greg,” you might ask, “How did you do it?” If I were indeed asked that, instead of yabbering on for lord knows how long—embellishing with unneeded detail & insisting that it’s much harder than I was actually describing—I would simply give you my list of steps. And such a list you would find, remarkably, right here:

BOXES

  • cut 3/4 panels with circular saw
  • cut 3/4 panels to width with table saw
  • cut 3/4 panels to length with table saw
  • cut 1/4 panel with circular saw
  • cut 1/4 panel to width with table saw
  • cut 1/4 panel to length with table saw
  • sand panels
  • cut 3/4 panels with table saw for base
  • drill pocket screws in base
  • assemble, glue, & screw base
  • run face frame stock through thickness planer
  • cut face frame stock to width
  • cut face frame stock to length
  • cut mounting cleat stock to length
  • drill holes for rope lighting
  • drill pocket screws in side panels for face frame
  • cut panel biscuits
  • assemble base
  • hand sand panels
  • vacuum panels
  • drill pilot holes for side panel screws
  • assemble, glue, drill, & screw panels
  • cut face frame biscuits
  • assemble, glue, & screw face frames
  • sand face frame stock
  • assemble, glue, & screw face frame onto panels
  • install back panel
  • cut pantry top panels
  • prep pantry top panels (biscuts & pocket holes)
  • sand pantry top panels
  • assemble pantry top panels
  • install pantry top on pantry

FINISHING

  • apply finish to box (x4)

HARDWARE

  • install rope lighting tracks
  • mount drawer hardware to box
  • mount pantry hardware to box

INSTALLATION

  • pull up floor
  • remove shelving
  • drill through slab
  • put in space
  • shim & screw-in

PANTRY ELSE

  • hand sand doors + drawer fronts
  • sand pantry top face frame
  • apply finish to doors + drawer fronts (x4)
  • apply finish to pantry top (x4)
  • mount drawer front to hardware
  • mount hinges to pantry box
  • drill for hinges in door
  • mount door on hinges
  • install appropriate molding

ELECTRIC

  • branch circuit
  • install 12v transformer
  • install switch

The next ones should go much faster—no need to wait for ordered tools. And I’m sure I’ve left out quite a bit of detail and really, it’s much harder than I actually described.
