Front Kitchen

With the new counter happily installed in the back of the kitchen, it pretty much wraps up that part of the kitchen. There’s molding and flooring to put in, but I’ll do that all at once for the whole kitchen once everything else is done.

Now it’s time to crack open the front.

With the warm weather earlier this January, I built the upper cabinets. But since they still need to be finished, it’ll be until the March (when the weather warms up enough for the varnish) before I can complete them. And being that they’re just wooden boxes, a picture isn’t all that exciting.

But along with the upper cabinets comes a variety of new lighting—rope lights inside, rope lights on top, halogen lights on the bottom, and recessed lights in the ceiling. I often say “Everytime I cut into a wall in this house, there’s a surprise.” I fervently hope to myself, however, that each time I do cut that it’ll be easy. No such luck for the ceiling.

3 4” holes for 3 recessed fixtures:

  1. 1/2” drywall with 1/2” plywood and inch above it
  2. 1/2” drywall with 3/4” of plaster & metal lathe
  3. Same as 2, with the addition of a toilet flange in the way

This explains the ovals in the picture. And the picture show the other fun discovery when I removed a small upper cabinet—there’s no plaster on the top 12” of the wall, just crappy looking brick. So I’ll be fixing that too.

So that’s where it stands now, got one light wired & installed and I’ll be patching the other 2.
