Load 'em up, move 'em out
Yep, I'm leaving AOL. Doing so for a number of reasons -- some external to work, others internal. But I suppose the overriding reason is that it's been 9 years. Geez! Continue reading »
Savage River and Fallingwater
Last weekend we went to Savage River Lodge in western Maryland for our anniversary. I highly recommend the lodge. Words cannot express the distaste I have for the bed and breakfast—mainly because of the obligatory chatter one must engage in with strangers. In Savage River Lodge there is a lodge with a restaurant and very nice cabins—so there are other folks if you like, but you do not have to pay attention to them. Continue reading »
Funnies
Just type in commands and the Subservient Chicken will do whatever you command. Personally I like watching him build a fort -- but there's plenty else he can do. Gotta love folks with too much time on their hands. (And yes, I know what your thinking about me.)

Recent Listening
I've got a commute that averages 1 1/2 hours a day. The downside is, yes, it sucks. But the upside is that I have plenty of time by myself to listen to music. I'll extoll the virtues of my iPod in a later entry, but it allows me to listen to playlists. Here's the one I'm on right now -- mid-70's singer-songwriter:
* Joni Mitchell - Help Me
* Paul Simon - Loves Me Like A Rock
* Carole King - Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow
* Harry Nilsson - Everybody's Talkin'
* Gordon Lightfoot - Rainy Day People
* Jackson Browne - Doctor My Eyes
* Joni Mitchell - Free Man In Paris Continue reading »
Easter Rockets
Saw this piece on the BBC world news last night. Easter on the Greek island of Chios is marked by rival churches firing home-made rockets at each other's church bells. Two thoughts about this: 1) my, *that's* wierd -- sufficiently wierd enough for me to wonder why I haven't heard of that before. 2) The footage of the rockets at night was surprizingly beautiful. Against the black night sky and the dim illumination of the medieval architecture, the dizzying number of the brilliant streaks across the frame took my breath away.
Spring Face Cleaning
It's always interesting to note who notices that I've shaved. I've not been shaving since Christmas (it's not really enough to call a beard), and this weekend I shaved. Those who know me the least are always the ones who call it right off the bat, "You've shaved!" The folks who've known me for a long time just sense that something has changed -- haircut, new glasses, new medication.
I dislike shaving, so it'll go back to obligitory modern-white-guy goatee soon enough.
Picky Picky
I'm a do-it-youselfer. No matter what the task is, after careful thinking and consideration, I usually end up doing it myself. Running a new 220 volt circuit, building a tiles shower, putting together a web site. Surgery I'd shy away from -- unless it wasn't too deep. Then I could Google, library, & figure it out. I'm opinionated and cheap, er, frugal -- which gives me little alternatives in the doing. Continue reading »
Blogging
And so the blogging begins.
I'm still coming to terms with blogwriting. I kept a journal for years, but the public nature of a blog -- needless to say -- demands a change of focus. Or is it a change of honesty? Or does it really matter what the word is? Fact is that different audiences require unique voices and conversations. What I would write about in a solipsistic diary -- me, secret feelings, personal 'issues' -- would frankly be boring for a public forum. 'Know your audience' -- or at least realize you have one.
